The Sun Coast 48RE transmission, rated at 550HP, is designed for those who need reliable performance for towing, hauling, or slightly modified vehicles. This transmission incorporates several key upgrades that not only improve overall performance but also restore and enhance hydraulic integrity.
One of the major upgrades is the replacement of the factory accumulator piston. The original plastic piston deteriorates over time, leading to cracks or complete breakage. Additionally, cross-leaks within the bore are common, which is why we replace the factory piston with our improved billet version. This billet piston is engineered with a four-ring sealing design, compared to the factory's two-ring, ensuring better hydraulic integrity and enhanced reliability.
To address the common issues with the factory intermediate band circuit, we replace the factory cast servo with a larger billet servo that offers increased apply pressure and improved release. This servo is also upgraded to a four-ring design with a primary square-cut Teflon sealing ring and a secondary O-ring.
Further enhancements to the band circuit include a billet band anchor, strut, and custom ratio apply lever. The band itself is upgraded to a pro-series carbon graphite band, which improves friction performance and durability.
The valve body and pump are recalibrated, and the separator plate is replaced with a new laser-cut, Sun Coast-proprietary plate. These modifications allow for optimal line pressure and increased fluid volume, with each valve body and pump custom-built to meet the specific needs of the customer, whether for towing, street performance, or track use.
An additional feature of this transmission is the billet one-piece input shaft, made from 300 maraging steel. This shaft is heat-treated and stress-relieved to handle higher torque and stress loads, and it is precision-ground for a perfect fit as a drop-in replacement.
The Sun Coast 48RE transmission also includes new overdrive and lockup solenoids, as well as an upgraded governor solenoid and DNJ billet solenoid housing, ensuring reliable operation under demanding conditions.
The billet triple disc torque converter features carbon graphite clutch material and is equipped with a precision CNC-machined, forged billet apply piston to prevent deflection, ensuring long-lasting performance.
