Detailed Product Description
The 178/208 Camshaft is engineered for Cummins 12v and 24v engines, offering improved efficiency, power, and reduced exhaust gas temperatures (EGT). This camshaft is ideal for pulling applications, providing low RPM performance, and enhancing both small and large single or twin turbo setups. It delivers a quicker turbo spool-up while maintaining efficiency across the board.
For a proper "drop-in" fit, the following modifications are required:
- 12v engines: No more than .020″ piston protrusion and at least .055″ valve face depth with a standard head gasket and a 99 intake centerline.
- 24v engines: No more than .020″ piston protrusion and at least .038″ valve face depth with a standard gasket.
Even though this cam is considered a "drop-in," it is essential to check clearances. If your piston-to-valve clearance doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, an oversized head gasket or cutting valve reliefs can be used to achieve proper fitment. Additionally, new lifters are recommended when changing the cam to ensure optimal performance.
Applications
- Pulling applications
- Low RPM performance
- Suitable for both large and small singles or twins
- Designed for increased all-around efficiency
Break-in Instructions
To ensure proper break-in and avoid issues, follow these steps:
- Apply a liberal amount of high-quality assembly lube to the camshaft.
- Do not start the engine without verifying oil pressure.
- Prime the oil pump and oil filter thoroughly, especially for new engines.
- After break-in, change the oil and filter.
- Disconnect the fuel system and spin the engine using the starter until oil pressure is visible or oil is flowing from the rocker arms.
- Avoid running the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time.
- Once oil pressure is confirmed, run the engine for five minutes at 1200-1500 RPM, then shut it down.
- Adjust the valves once the break-in process is complete.
- If you need to re-torque or "hot-torque" the head, do so before adjusting the valves, as this will change the valve lash setting.
